How to Blur or Redact Part of a Screenshot?

Hide names, account details, addresses and other private information safely before sharing a screenshot.

Blurring and redaction are not the same security level. A blur can make text difficult to read, but strong privacy needs a solid opaque redaction that completely covers the sensitive information in the exported image.

Email addresses, phone numbers and home addresses.
Account numbers, order numbers and customer identifiers.
Passwords, recovery codes and security questions.
Private messages and contact names that are unrelated to the point of the screenshot.
Browser tabs, notifications or profile pictures that reveal more than intended.
Location details, QR codes or barcodes when they contain private information.

When should you crop instead of blur?

Cropping is usually the safest option when the private information is near an edge and is not needed for context. Removing the pixels entirely is clearer than covering them. Keep enough surrounding content to preserve the meaning of the screenshot.

How do you redact sensitive information safely?

Duplicate the screenshot if you need to keep the original.
Crop unrelated private content first.
Place a fully opaque block over the sensitive text or image.
Flatten or export the edited result as a new file so the hidden information is not stored as a removable editing layer.
Open the exported file again and zoom in to confirm nothing is readable.
Share only the exported redacted copy.

Why can light blur be risky?

A weak blur, translucent marker or pixelation effect can leave recognizable letter shapes, numbers or patterns. Some editing formats can also keep original layers or editable objects. For important personal or financial information, use a solid block and export a flattened image.

How do you redact on Windows, Mac, iPhone or Android?

The exact editor differs by platform. Windows Snipping Tool and Paint can crop and cover areas. macOS and iOS include Markup tools. Android manufacturer editors vary. The important rule is the same on every device: do not rely on a decorative blur when the hidden information must be unrecoverable from the shared copy.

Evidence and documentation warning

If the screenshot may be used as evidence, keep the untouched original separately. Make a copy for redaction and clearly distinguish the edited copy from the original. Avoid edits that could change the meaning of the visible conversation, date, error message or transaction.

Redaction checklist

Check all four edges of the image.
Inspect the status bar and notification area.
Zoom in on every redacted area.
Make sure the editor did not save an editable layer that can simply be removed.
Check the filename if it contains a person, account or project name.
