Screenshot Not Working? Fix Common Problems
Complete screenshot troubleshooting for Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone, Chromebook and Linux.
Screenshot problems usually fall into one of five categories: the wrong shortcut, a hardware/key issue, a capture app problem, confusion about save location/clipboard, or an intentional app/security restriction. Diagnose the category before installing another screenshot app.
1. Test the operating system’s main screenshot tool
Windows: open Snipping Tool. Mac: press ShiftCommand5. Android/iPhone: test on the Home screen. Chromebook: open Screen Capture from the status area. Linux: launch the desktop screenshot tool directly. If the app works but the shortcut does not, focus on keyboard/button settings rather than the whole screenshot system.
2. Check keys and buttons
- Laptop Print Screen can require Fn or be remapped.
- Phone cases can prevent Power and Volume buttons from registering together.
- A damaged Side/Home/Volume key can be replaced by accessibility/no button screenshot methods.
- External keyboards can use different ChromeOS mappings.
3. Check clipboard versus file saving
A successful capture may not create a file. Windows PrtScn and AltPrtScn are classic clipboard examples. Paste into an editor to see whether the image exists.
4. Test another app
If screenshots work on the Home screen/desktop but fail in one banking, private, password, streaming or enterprise app, the restriction may be intentional. Do not try to bypass secure display protections.
5. Check storage and destination
Low storage, a changed save folder, cloud sync redirection or an unavailable external drive can make a screenshot appear to vanish even though capture succeeded.
6. Scrolling screenshot problems
- Capture more/Scroll capture only appears on supported scrollable content.
- Long pages with lazy loading or sticky headers can render poorly.
- Older Android/iOS/software versions may not support the same long capture flow.
7. Managed devices
Work and school administrators can enforce policies that disable screen capture or limit where files are saved. If the device is managed, check with the administrator before changing system settings.
When to repair/reset a capture app?
If the built in screenshot application itself will not open or repeatedly crashes, update the operating system/app through official channels, restart the device, then use the platform’s app repair/reset options where available.
